The Brownwood Art Association is starting Creative Edge, a free after-school arts enrichment program for students ages 16–18, with registration required and introductory sessions scheduled in September at the Brownwood Art Center.

Community Fisk Avenue
Brown County 4-H families can now begin enrollment for the new 4-H year, but submitting payment alone does not complete the process. Families must select projects, choose “Program Participant” for each one and submit every member’s profile for review. Incoming third graders must wait until September 1 to enroll.

The No. 24 Brownwood Lions will travel Thursday to meet No. 12 Alvarado in their final preseason football scrimmage, with live regulation quarters planned and a 6:30 p.m. start for the varsity warm-up.

The Brownwood Area Chamber and Early Chamber of Commerce will host the Education in Brown County Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at the Early Visitors & Events Center, with speakers representing area schools and colleges.

Registration is open for the 2026–27 Leadership Brownwood class, a yearlong program focused on leadership development and an inside look at business and government across Brown County. Coggin Elementary sixth-grade students are scheduled to explore the Bill of Rights and modern public service during a Constitution Week event on September 17 in Brownwood.

Brown County commissioners approved asbestos surveys, architectural planning and the next construction-management step for remodeling projects involving the Treasury, Elections and Tax Assessor-Collector departments. The court also approved the proposed 2026/2027 tax rate, a September budget hearing, a patrol vehicle purchase and continued the countywide burn ban.

Brownwood’s Lady Lions opened the 2026 cross country season with a five-point victory in the Elite Girls Division at the Jim Ned Warpath Invitational in Abilene State Park. The Brownwood boys finished seventh in the varsity competition, while the junior varsity boys placed third.
Education Woodland Heights
Brownwood ISD earned an overall B rating of 83 from the Texas Education Agency, up from a C rating of 78 the previous year. Brownwood High School rose 11 points to an 89, while East Elementary earned an A.
Business & Openings
Brownwood’s girls volleyball team earned its first win of the 2026 season Friday at the Abilene Bev Ball Classic, defeating Class 3A Sweetwater before losing to Class 5A Abilene Cooper. The Lady Lions entered Saturday bracket play with a 1-2 record and an 8 a.m. match scheduled against an opponent that had not yet been determined.

The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce will host a free Business Expo and Food Truck Cook-Off on Sept. 17, 2026, at the Brownwood Event Center Complex, with registration still open for businesses and food trucks.

Brown County Commissioners Court approved Anna Davenport’s hiring as the county’s next Texas A&M AgriLife Extension agent. Davenport, who has taught at a Tennessee college and has an agriculture and 4-H background, is expected to begin Sept. 1, 2026.

Texas DPS and the Brown County Sheriff’s Office are seeking information about the 1996 killing of Juan Leon Laureles near Brownwood.
