Lake Brownwood will host a major youth fishing tournament Saturday, Oct. 31, as the Texas High School Bass Association returns for its third West Division tournament of the season. Visit Early is welcoming about 260 student anglers, along with their families, coaches and supporters, for a weekend expected to bring visitors and business activity to the Early and Lake Brownwood area.

Anglers are scheduled to arrive Friday for registration before Saturday’s competition. The tournament is expected to include 130 teams representing 29 high schools. Competitors will be fishing for $8,650 in prizes and scholarships, including $6,000 in guaranteed scholarships.

Tournament brings visitors to Lake Brownwood

The event is more than an on-the-water competition. Denise Hudson-Brian, director of Visit Early, said tournaments such as this support area hotels, restaurants and other local businesses. The visiting anglers and their families also will have opportunities to shop, dine and explore the Early area during the weekend.

“Events like the THSBA tournament bring a tremendous economic benefit to our area by supporting our hotels, restaurants, and local businesses,” Hudson-Brian said. “What makes this event even more special is that these anglers and their families are also giving back to the community. The toy drive is a great example of how tournaments can make a positive impact beyond the competition, and we are grateful that the toys collected this weekend will help bring some extra joy to children right here in Brown County.”

How the toy drive will help Brown County children

The tournament will include the THSBA’s annual Toy Drive, which is held during the final fall tournament in each division. Anglers, families and supporters are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to tournament check-in or weigh-in on Saturday.

Toys collected at the Lake Brownwood tournament will be provided to Visit Early for distribution to children in Brown County. The drive connects the tournament’s visiting fishing community with local holiday assistance efforts and gives participants a way to contribute while they compete.

Statewide student fishing program

The Texas High School Bass Association is a statewide nonprofit organization that provides high school students with organized bass-fishing competitions. The association maintains academic standards and encourages success both in the classroom and on the water.

THSBA serves more than 3,000 student anglers from approximately 250 Texas high schools. It operates nine divisions statewide and holds about 50 tournaments each season. The program is designed to help students develop fishing skills, sportsmanship and teamwork while competing with peers.

Visit Early said hosting the tournament highlights Lake Brownwood as a destination for competitive fishing and introduces visiting students, families and supporters to the area. The organization welcomed the anglers, coaches, families and supporters and highlighted the tournament and toy drive as examples of the potential impact of youth sports, tourism and community partnerships across Brown County.
