The Brownwood Lions enter Friday night with a chance to extend one of the area’s longest active high school football playoff streaks, but their path to an 18th consecutive postseason appearance requires two results. Brownwood must defeat the winless Waco Connally Cadets, and Salado must defeat Gatesville.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mac Peoples Stadium. Brownwood is listed at 3-5 overall and 1-2 in District 13-4A Division II, while Connally is 0-8 overall and 0-3 in district play. Salado is 3-5 and 1-2, and Gatesville is 4-4 and 1-2.

Playoff picture depends on Salado-Gatesville

If Brownwood wins and Salado beats Gatesville, the Lions and Salado Eagles would meet in Week 11 at Gordon Wood Stadium. That game would determine the third and fourth playoff seeds from District 13-4A Division II.

A Gatesville victory would keep the race unresolved. In that scenario, Gatesville, Salado and Brownwood would all remain alive heading into the final Friday of the regular season. Brownwood’s immediate assignment, however, remains the same regardless of the other result: the Lions must take care of Connally.

The opportunity follows Brownwood’s most complete performance of the season, a 38-7 homecoming victory over Gatesville. It was the Lions’ first District 13-4A Division II win and provided a sharp improvement heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Gatesville win showed progress on both sides

Brownwood generated 349 total yards against Gatesville, with 183 yards rushing and 166 passing. Quarterback Riggs Gray completed 8 of 15 passes for two touchdowns and one interception, and he added a rushing touchdown. Trent Buffington ran for 126 yards and a touchdown, while Conner Cornelius made three catches for 56 yards and a touchdown.

The Lions’ defense held Gatesville to 274 total yards. The Hornets managed only 79 rushing yards on 35 carries, an average of 2.2 yards per attempt. Hudson Deen returned an interception 63 yards for a touchdown, while Kasyn Wooten and Wyatt Wolf also intercepted passes. Christian Gray recovered an onside kick that Gatesville was unable to handle.

Brownwood second-year head coach Jeryl Brixey credited the defense’s recent improvement, noting that the unit had multiple goal-line stands, three interceptions and three or four sacks in the Gatesville game. The source also said the Lions have gotten players back from injury or absence while younger players have stepped into larger roles.

“Our defense played really great,” Brixey said. “We had multiple goal line stands, three interceptions, three or four sacks, it was a really good night.”

Offensively, Brixey said the Lions entered the game intending to throw more often and give Gray opportunities to succeed. Gray completed about 53 percent of his passes, produced nearly 180 passing yards and connected on several big plays. Brixey also said multiple receivers contributed, making the offense more difficult to defend, while Buffington continued to run effectively.

Season numbers show a balanced Brownwood attack

Through eight games, Brownwood is averaging 20.0 points and 268.5 yards per game. The Lions have produced 2,148 total yards, including 1,332 rushing yards and 816 passing yards. Their average is 166.5 rushing yards and 102.0 passing yards per contest.

Buffington has been the primary driver of the ground game, carrying 190 times for 985 yards and 11 touchdowns. Ezra House has added 225 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Sirr Beam has 54 rushing yards and a score. Gray has completed 53 of 129 passes for 808 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Cornelius leads the receiving group with 14 catches for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Brody Bolton has eight receptions for 220 yards and a touchdown, and Jack Bauchman has 10 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. Isaac Gonzales has seven catches for 66 yards and a touchdown, while Rush Tharp has two receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Brownwood is allowing 31.2 points and 407.0 yards per game, including 185 rushing yards and 222 passing yards per outing. Wyatt Wolf leads the team with 59.5 tackles, three interceptions and two blocked field goals. Gonzales has 56.5 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks and two fumble recoveries. Hudson Deen has 46.5 tackles and an interception, while Christian Gray has 45.5 tackles, eight tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery.

The season turnover summary lists Brownwood with a plus-eight turnover margin: the Lions have eight turnovers, including one fumble and seven interceptions, while opponents have 16 turnovers, including six fumbles and 10 interceptions. The defense’s listed individual statistics also include three interceptions for Wolf, three for Sirr Beam and two each for Hutton Malone and Hayden Fulkersin.

Brixey cautions Lions against overlooking Connally

Connally’s record makes Brownwood the apparent favorite, but Brixey has spent the week warning players not to treat the game as automatic. The Cadets average 17 points and 308 yards per game, including 212 passing yards and 96 rushing yards.

“Connally is struggling and it’s a game we feel like if we play at the level we’re supposed to play at, we should win this game,” Brixey said. “But there’s been a lot of struggling teams that have beat a lot of good football teams because the good football teams don’t get ready to play.”

Connally is led by quarterback KD Linville, who has 1,452 passing yards, 10 touchdown passes and four interceptions. Linville has also rushed for 411 yards and two touchdowns. His receiving options include CJ Evans, Dreydon Burns, Reginald Marshall, Jayvion King, Raheem Fluker and Marcus Murphy. Running back Derrick Dooley has 104 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Brixey described Linville as a quick quarterback who can throw accurately and warned that Connally’s receivers have enough speed to produce immediate touchdowns if Brownwood loses focus.

“They’re not bereft of talent, they have some very athletic kids and if we fall asleep and don’t do what were supposed to they can score touchdowns in one play,” Brixey said.

Connally’s defense is allowing about 50 points per game. The Cadets have recorded three sacks and three takeaways. Their leading tacklers include Dareon Scott, Elijah Amos, Bryson Sparkman, Aiden Perry-Johnson, Ricardo Olguin, Kei’Onn Cobb and Idrees Lee.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football ranked Brownwood No. 24 in Class 4A Division II for the week and Connally No. 72. No prediction was offered. For the Lions, the next step is clear: win Friday night, then monitor the Salado-Gatesville result to learn whether the playoff berth is secured and whether a Week 11 seeding game follows.
