Five careers with Brownwood roots
McCullough won four state championship medals as a Brownwood Lion in track and finished second in two other state-meet races. He anchored championship 440-yard relay teams in 1962 and 1964, won the 220-yard dash in 1962 and the 100-yard dash in 1964, and set a school record of 21.3 seconds in the 220-yard dash at the Little State Meet in Corpus Christi.
During his three years running for Brownwood, the Lions won three district championships, three regional championships and one state championship. After high school, McCullough attended Baylor University on a track scholarship, served three years in the U.S. Army and spent 43 years working in Arlington Independent School District, where he held positions including teacher, coach, principal and superintendent. He later served on several North Texas and Tarrant County boards and founded Men Serving God in 2012.
Moore, a 1986 Brownwood High School graduate, became the Lions’ starting quarterback during the 1985 season after injuries to Kevin Boscamp and Mike Norman. He helped Brownwood defeat the Crowley Eagles in a game initially recognized as Coach Gordon Wood’s 400th career victory, although Wood’s record was later adjusted.
Moore’s senior season ended temporarily when he broke his collarbone against Joshua, but he returned for the playoff run. He also helped establish Brownwood’s baseball program when it restarted in 1984 and earned All-District honors at second base. After attending Abilene Christian University, Moore returned to Brownwood as a coach and later served Brownwood ISD as a principal, assistant superintendent and athletic director. His 31-year career with the district ended with his retirement in summer 2026. He then became Brown County auditor.
Stovall, a 1990 Brownwood High School graduate, was a three-year letterman in both football and baseball. He earned first-team all-district football honors as a senior and played at Angelo State University from 1990 to 1993 before beginning his coaching career at Brownwood High School in 1996.
At Brownwood, Stovall coached football, baseball and track. He later helped open Denton Guyer High School in 2005, serving as offensive coordinator through 2019 and assistant head coach since 2020. His career at Guyer includes five state championship appearances and two state championship teams.
Lancaster, a 1998 Brownwood High School graduate, lettered in football for three years and baseball for four. He played on teams that reached the Region 1 quarterfinals in both sports and earned multiple all-district and all-state recognitions. He attended Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University, then worked in banking in Lubbock and Brownwood before continuing a 23-year career in Abilene as a senior vice president of commercial lending at a local community bank.
Alcorn developed into a nationally recognized golfer after beginning his career in Brownwood. He was named to the 2000 All-State team, won the 2002 Brownwood Invitational with a 63 and was the 2003 District 8-4A Newcomer of the Year. At Baylor, he became a four-year letterwinner, won five individual tournaments, earned First-Team All-Big 12 and PING All-America honors, and was inducted into the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022.
After professional golf and work as a PGA Tour caddie, Alcorn coached at Texas Tech, Coastal Carolina, Liberty, NC State and Baylor. He returned to Baylor in 2023. His mother, Diane Tinkler, continues to reside in Brownwood.
