Brownwood residents turned National Night Out into a major food donation effort, collecting 2,129 cans of tuna for Good Samaritan Ministries. The contribution was part of this year’s Tuna Challenge, which produced a record total of 8,625 cans with support from United Supermarkets.

The City of Brownwood shared the results on social media Thursday, according to Brownwood News. The donations are expected to help Good Samaritan Ministries meet its current need for approximately five months, giving the local ministry a substantial supply of tuna for its ongoing work in the community.

Local block party leads Brownwood collection

A Brownwood block party hosted by Amanda and Heath Bundick collected 638 cans. That total earned the block party this year’s Tuna Challenge title and represented nearly a third of the cans collected in Brownwood.

The broader effort connected neighborhood participation during National Night Out with support for Good Samaritan Ministries, which was recognized for its continuing work throughout the community. United Supermarkets also contributed to the record-setting regional total.

Community partners recognized

The City of Brownwood and organizers also thanked Heart of Texas Crime Stoppers for its generous donation and support of National Night Out. Good Samaritan Ministries was recognized for the important work it continues to provide for residents.

The collection illustrates how Brownwood neighborhood events can support local charitable services while participating in a national community-safety observance. Brownwood’s 2,129-can contribution formed part of the 8,625-can Tuna Challenge total announced in October.
