The Brownwood Lions used a disruptive defense, a balanced offense and three interceptions to secure their first District 13-4A Division II victory of the season, beating the Gatesville Hornets 38-7 Friday night at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Brownwood improved to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in district play. Gatesville fell to 4-4 and 1-2. The Lions converted their three interceptions into 17 points and held the Hornets to 274 yards of total offense, including only 79 rushing yards on 35 carries.

Defense sets the tone at Gordon Wood Stadium

Brownwood’s defense produced interceptions from Kasyn Wooten, Hudson Deen and Wyatt Wolf. Deen delivered the biggest defensive play, returning a tipped pass 63 yards for a touchdown with 26 seconds remaining in the first half.

Wooten’s interception came early in the game, after Gatesville quarterback Elijah Phillips’ errant pass landed in the defensive back’s coverage. Wooten returned the ball to the Gatesville 21-yard line, setting up a 35-yard field goal by Aiden Jimenez. The kick, Jimenez’s longest of the season, extended Brownwood’s lead to 10-0 with 2:13 left in the opening quarter.

Wolf stopped another Gatesville opportunity in the second half by intercepting Phillips in the end zone and returning the ball to the Brownwood 44. The Hornets’ possession had consumed 5 minutes, 36 seconds over 13 plays but produced no points.

Brownwood head coach Jeryl Brixey credited the defense after the game.

“It was a good game, I was really proud of our defense,” said Lions second-year head coach Jeryl Brixey. “We had some crucial, big-time goal line stands, that was big.”

Gatesville’s only touchdown came before halftime, when a nine-play, 80-yard drive ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by Phillips with 1:41 remaining. The score cut Brownwood’s lead to 17-7, but Deen’s interception return put the Lions back in control before the break.

Buffington, Gray lead Brownwood offense

Brownwood finished with 349 total yards, gaining 183 on the ground and 166 through the air. Trent Buffington led the rushing attack with 126 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Riggs Gray completed 8 of 15 passes for two touchdowns and one interception. Gray also rushed for a score.

Buffington opened the scoring with a 68-yard touchdown run on Brownwood’s third possession, giving the Lions a 7-0 advantage with 4:55 left in the first quarter. It was his 11th touchdown of the season, and the run left him with 985 rushing yards for the year.

Gray added a 27-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Gonzales with 7:11 remaining before halftime. The drive stayed alive when Brownwood converted a third-and-17 from its own 25-yard line on a bubble screen from Gray to Jimenez. Jimenez moved the ball to the Gatesville 40 and finished the night with two catches for 44 yards.

After halftime, Brownwood pulled farther away. The Lions drove 56 yards in six plays, helped by a 43-yard completion from Gray to Brady Bolton. Gray then scored on a 5-yard fourth-down run with 3:47 left in the third quarter, making the score 31-7.

Conner Cornelius capped the scoring with a 34-yard touchdown reception from Gray with 6:03 remaining. Cornelius finished with three receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Brixey said the Lions entered the game intending to throw more as they work toward a postseason push.

“We came into the night honestly with the idea we were going to throw the football more,” Brixey said. “We need to, and down the road if we’re able to get where we want to be, build on next week and the week after and make a little playoff run, we’re going to have to be able to throw and catch the football.”

Playoff path now runs through next two games

Friday’s victory was the first of two district wins Brownwood needs to make the playoffs, according to the game report. The Lions will travel next week to face winless Waco Connally, which entered the matchup at 0-8 overall and 0-3 in district play after a 62-27 loss to Robinson.

Brownwood can secure the No. 3 playoff seed from District 13-4A Division II by defeating Waco Connally and then Salado in the Lions’ Nov. 6 home finale. A likely opening-round opponent would be Lago Vista, which was listed at 6-2 overall and 2-1 in District 14.

Gray said the win gave Brownwood confidence heading into the remaining games.

“It definitely brings us some confidence going into these next few games. We knew we had to get the win tonight and that’s what we did. We’re going to continue to get better in practice each and every day and follow what our coaches are telling us to do.”
