Five Brownwood High School standouts joined the Gordon Wood Hall of Champions on Friday, while the 2025 Lady Lions track and field team received special recognition for winning Brownwood’s first girls team state championship in any sport.

The Class of 2026 ceremony was held at the Brownwood Event Center for the first time. The inductees were Jerry McCullough, Mitch Moore, Mitch Stovall, Adam Lancaster and Jeremy Alcorn.

Five inductees with deep Brownwood ties

Moore, a 1986 Brownwood High School graduate, played quarterback for the Lions before returning to coach at his alma mater. He later served as Brownwood Independent School District’s athletic director and retired earlier in 2026.

In his speech, Moore credited the coaches, teammates and mentors who shaped his career, including Coach Southall and Gordon Wood. He said he was grateful to have played for Wood, coached the Brownwood Lions and served as BISD athletic director.

“My name is Mitch Moore, and I am proud to be a Brownwood Lion, today and forever.”

McCullough won four state championship medals as a Brownwood track athlete and finished second in two other state-meet races. His 41.8-second time on the 1964 state-champion 4x100 relay team and his 21.3-second 200-meter time remain Brownwood school records.

McCullough, 80, said a conversation with Brownwood Principal A.D. Lamb and Coach R.E. Wells during his ninth-grade year changed the direction of his life. He later earned a four-year scholarship to Baylor University, became a teacher and coach, and served as superintendent of the fifth-largest school district in Texas, according to the account presented at the ceremony.

“R.E. Wells, my ninth-grade coach, and A.D. Lamb, my principal, threw me back into the ocean.”

Stovall, a member of Brownwood High School’s class of 1990, was a three-year football letterman and a three-year baseball letterman. In football, he earned first-team all-district honors as a senior center, was named All-Area by the Abilene Reporter-News and was selected to the Associated Press Second Team Super Team All-State. He was also named to the Brownwood High School All-Time Team.

Stovall earned first-team all-district and All-Area honors in baseball during his junior and senior seasons. He joins his father, former Brownwood Bulletin sports editor Bill Stovall, in the Hall of Champions.

“But make no mistake for me, going in the Hall of Champions alongside my dad is at the top of the list.”

Alcorn established himself as a highly regarded young golfer in Texas while at Brownwood High School. He was named to the 2000 All-State team, selected as the 2003 District 8-4A Newcomer of the Year and won the 2002 Brownwood Invitational with a score of 63.

He also competed nationally in American Junior Golf Association events. At the 2001 AJGA Texace San Antonio Shootout, Alcorn tied for fourth after opening with consecutive rounds of 69. Unable to attend the ceremony, he sent a video message describing his induction and his Brownwood upbringing as an important foundation for his life.

“Growing up in Brownwood was an honor.”

Lancaster, a member of Brownwood High School’s class of 1998, played football and baseball during his four years at BHS. He was a three-year football letterman and played on teams that reached the Region 1 quarterfinals in consecutive years. His honors included two all-district selections, AP All-State Honorable Mention, Texas Sports Writers Association All-State First Team and the THSCA Academic All-State Team.

In baseball, Lancaster was a four-year letterman on teams that made multiple state playoff appearances. He was a three-time all-district selection and District 4-5A freshman of the year. Lancaster also was unable to attend and shared a recorded story about a prank phone call he made to former coach Moore years after graduation.

Lady Lions recognized for historic title

The 2025 Brownwood Lady Lions track and field team was recognized at the event after winning the Class 4A state championship on May 2, 2025, at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
