Michael Alan “Mike” Heath, a former Brownwood business owner and Brown County Sheriff’s Office jailer who was remembered for his faith, craftsmanship and devotion to his family, died peacefully September 20, 2026. He was 81.
Heath, who later lived in Princeton, Texas, died surrounded by family, according to his obituary published by Brownwood News. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, October 17, at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church. Pastor Tim Skaggs and Bill Allen will officiate.
A life shaped by military and public service
Heath was born November 17, 1944, in Amarillo to Lois Pauline (Carlile) and Hershel Eugene Heath. He graduated from Clarendon High School and joined the United States Marine Corps in January 1964.
He was stationed at El Toro Marine Air Base in Santa Ana, California, where he met Judy Pickering. The couple married August 6, 1965. Heath later served a tour of duty in Vietnam.
After returning home, Heath and Judy lived in Amarillo for several years before making their home in Brownwood. His working life included operating Mike’s Auto Specialties, working for the Santa Fe Railroad and the Texas State School, and completing his career as a jailer for the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.
Known for custom automotive work and family devotion
Heath’s business reflected his interest in making vehicles distinctive. He accessorized cars, trucks and horse trailers with pin-striping, running boards and other custom touches.
After retiring, he enjoyed traveling with Judy until her death. His family said he placed special importance on time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He attended every baseball game played by one of his great-grandsons and did not miss birthdays or other special events involving his great-grandchildren.
Heath was also active in his Christian faith. He participated in a men’s group at his McKinney church, supported missions and helped start the Celebrate Recovery Program at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors and memorial information
Heath is survived by his children, Tim Heath; Christy Heath Householder and her husband, Joe; and Mikah Heath Stanley and her husband, EJ. His surviving family also includes grandchildren Chase and Brittany Sides, Chelsey and Chad Cazzato, Dylan Knox, Sean Knox, Wesley and Naila Knox, and Trinity Heath.
He is also survived by bonus grandchildren Haley, Chandler, Kendall and Reagan Householder, and Corey and Lin Ozan; great-grandchildren Juliet, Michael, Violet and Daniel Sides, and Cora Cazzato; bonus great-grandchildren Oliva and Hayden Ozan; his brother, Kent Heath; and nephew Joseph Heath.
Heath was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Judy; his parents, Pauline and Hershel Heath; and his brother, Patrick Heath. His family and friends will remember him for his love of family, dedication to his country, craftsmanship, generosity and faith.
