Howard Payne University brought Brownwood-area business and civic leaders together for its annual Community Leadership Lunch and Learn, an event designed to strengthen connections between the university and the wider community.
The gathering was held in the Bullion Suites of the Mabee Center and included representatives from more than a dozen area businesses and civic organizations. Attendees had an opportunity to meet with one another and hear from an industry leader about business strategy, technology and adapting to change.
Doug Foster delivers keynote address
Doug Foster, principal and CEO of NovaLex Consulting, served as the event’s keynote speaker. NovaLex is described as an AI- and data-driven strategic advisory firm that serves both business-to-consumer and business-to-business enterprises.
Foster began his career at J. Walter Thompson, where he advanced to senior vice president. He later became the first chief marketing officer for 7-Eleven and held other chief marketing officer roles before founding NovaLex Consulting.
His presentation drew positive reactions from local business leaders. Carter Sharpe of Smith and Sharpe Agencies said his team looks forward to the annual event and praised Howard Payne for creating the opportunity. Sharpe said Foster’s remarks helped him redirect, focus on the road ahead and embrace change.
University highlights community partnerships
Howard Payne President Dr. Cory Hines thanked Foster for participating and said the luncheon helps bring people together, build relationships and create connections that benefit both the university and the community.
JD Johnson, president and CEO of Citizens National Bank, also attended. Johnson expressed appreciation for Howard Payne’s role as a community partner in Brown County and said he looks forward to the luncheon each year.
The event reflects Howard Payne’s broader mission as a Christ-centered liberal arts university in Brownwood. Founded in 1889, HPU offers more than 100 majors, minors and pre-professional programs through six schools and serves students at three locations.
The university says its five core values are centered on Christ, focused on community, called to service, committed to excellence and dedicated to stewardship. Its programs and campus activities include academics, student life, competitive athletics and service opportunities intended to prepare graduates for leadership and service in their communities and professions.
