Brownwood’s Lions and Lady Lions held off a Stephenville charge Thursday to earn an 11-8 road victory, their fourth consecutive win in District 6-4A team tennis competition.
The match in Stephenville had resumed after weather postponed it the previous Thursday. Brownwood’s boys’ team supplied most of the points, winning eight of its nine matches, while the Lady Lions added one doubles victory and two singles wins.
Brownwood boys dominate doubles
The Lions swept all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Blake Hutchins and Aiden Oplotnik defeated Kyler Virgin and Rydon Andrew, 6-2, 6-0. Cooper Morgan and Ian Cervantes won the No. 2 match over Uriel Perez and Eroc Mendoza, 6-3, 6-3.
Duncan Dennison and Parker Dennison completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, beating James Edwards and Joel Mangus, 6-0, 6-3.
Brownwood also won five of the boys’ six singles matches. Hutchins defeated Virgin, 6-1, 6-3, while Oplotnik beat Perez, 6-1, 6-1. Cervantes posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mendoza.
Parker Dennison defeated Magnus, 6-0, 6-1, and Duncan Dennison beat Edwards, 6-1, 6-0.
Lady Lions add three wins
The Lady Lions’ doubles point came from the No. 3 team of Amy Deechaleune and Willow Camp, who defeated Bellany McEvoy and Rebekah Evans, 6-4, 6-3.
Deechaleune then secured the team decision with a No. 6 singles win over Lainey Virgin, 6-4, 6-2. Gigi Rodriguez added an insurance point in the No. 2 singles match, rallying past Margaret Horton, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.
The result moved the combined Lions and Lady Lions record to 4-5 overall and 4-1 in district action. Aiden Oplotnik and Amy Deechaleune each contributed to four Brownwood victories during the match.
Next matches
Brownwood will return to competition at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a non-district match at Abilene Cooper. The team’s next district contest is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 1, against Peaster in Glen Rose.
