The Brownwood High Lions and Lady Lions picked up their first team tennis victory of the season Tuesday, beating District 6-4A rival Graham 15-4 on the road in 107-degree heat. The result gave Brownwood a 1-1 district record and moved the team to 1-5 overall.
The afternoon’s leading milestone came from Blake Hutchins, who recorded the 100th win of his high school career. Hutchins swept Graham’s Tyler Bryan, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 1 boys singles match.
Brownwood boys collect singles and doubles wins
Hutchins was one of five Brownwood boys singles players to win. Aiden Oplotnik, competing at No. 2, defeated Chris Reyes 7-5, 6-3. Ian Cervantes won the No. 4 match against Brooklyn Tarsoaga 6-3, 6-0, while Parker Dennison beat Keigan Garland 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5. Duncan Dennison completed the singles victories with a 6-0, 6-1 result over Jordan Meranda at No. 6.
Brownwood also won two boys doubles matches. Cervantes and Cooper Morgan prevailed over Tarsoaga and Garland 7-6 [5], 6-4 in the No. 2 match. At No. 3, Parker Dennison and Duncan Dennison defeated Miranda and Manuel Perez 6-0, 6-0.
Lady Lions sweep doubles competition
The Lady Lions won all three of their doubles matches against Graham. Gigi Rodriguez and Jami Patterson earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Manjat Humpal and Lauren Buckley in the No. 1 match. Coulter Day and Arely Carrere defeated Brylee Jones and Lauren White 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, and Amy Deechaleune and Willow Camp beat Zoey Milligan and Vanessa Ibarra 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.
Brownwood’s Lady Lions also secured five singles victories. Rodriguez defeated Humpal 6-3, 6-0, and Day beat Buckley by the same score. Carrere won a three-set match against Jones 6-4, 4-6, 12-10. Camp defeated White 6-4, 6-2, while Deechaleune beat Milligan 6-1, 6-1.
Next match is at home against Mineral Wells
The Lions and Lady Lions are scheduled to return to action Tuesday, Sept. 1, when they host Mineral Wells at 4 p.m. The match will be another District 6-4A contest for Brownwood.
