Brownwood tennis made its first home District 6-4A match of the season a winning one Tuesday afternoon, as the Lions and Lady Lions defeated Mineral Wells 14-5 for their second consecutive district victory.
The result moved Brownwood to 2-1 against district opponents and 2-5 overall this season. The team’s next district test is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Stephenville, a 6-4A rival.
Brownwood boys sweep doubles
The Lions were perfect in their three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Blake Hutchins and Aiden Oplotnik defeated Mineral Wells’ Rishi Patel and Elijah Wagoner, 6-0, 6-1.
Cooper Morgan and Ian Cervantes won the No. 2 doubles match against Hudson Smith and Jonah Washington by a 6-0, 6-0 score. In the No. 3 pairing, Duncan Dennison and Parker Dennison beat Lonnie Mills and Landon Kidd, 6-2, 6-2.
Brownwood added five boys’ singles victories. Hutchins defeated Samuel Perricone, 3-6, 6-0, 10-8, while Oplotnik beat Patel, 6-4, 6-0. Cervantes won over Mills, 6-1, 6-4, and Parker Dennison defeated Brayden Schutz, 6-2, 6-0. Duncan Dennison completed the singles wins with a 6-1, 6-0 result against Smith.
Lady Lions add six wins
The Lady Lions won two of their three doubles matches. Gigi Rodriguez and Jami Patterson, playing at No. 1, came back to defeat Kailey Grogan and Paisley Beyer, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.
At No. 3 doubles, Amy Deechaleune and Willow Camp posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mya Hernandez and Andrea De Paz. Mineral Wells won the remaining listed girls’ doubles match.
Rodriguez also earned a singles victory, defeating Grogan, 10-7, 6-3. Arely Carrere won her No. 4 singles match against Christian Bell, 5-3, by default.
Camp defeated Stephanie Villegas, 6-3, 6-0, while Deechaleune beat Hernandez, 7-5, 6-2. Those four singles results gave the Lady Lions four individual wins to go with their two doubles victories.
Among the Brownwood players contributing to a combined four victories were Rodriguez and Ian Cervantes. Brownwood will now prepare for the Sept. 10 trip to Stephenville as district play continues.
