Brown County election officials are processing approximately 690 voter-registration records delivered after a Texas Department of Public Safety technology error created a statewide backlog, according to information released by the Brown County Elections Office on Sept. 24, 2026.
The issue involves voter-registration applications and updates submitted through the DPS online driver’s license portal. Some records were not sent to county voter registrars when they were submitted, meaning applications dating back to October 2025 reached election offices only this week.

The Brown County Elections Office said county registrars across Texas received a large influx of delayed registrations and updates during the preceding 24 hours. In Brown County, officials received about 690 records that must now be processed.
“Over the past 24 hours, Texas county voter registrars across the state have received a flood of new voter registrations and updates to voter registration records submitted through the Texas Department of Public Safety. Some of these submissions date as far back as October 2025 but were not sent to Texas county voter registrars until this week. In Brown County, we received approximately 690 records to process as a result of a technological error at the state level that caused this major backlog. Texas voters should be confident that Texas county election officials are working around the clock to ensure valid voter registrations submitted in a timely manner before the deadline will be processed appropriately, despite the challenges and additional time that this backlog has created. We encourage Texas voters to verify their registration status by visiting VoteTexas.gov or by contacting their county voter registrar to verify that their current voter registration information is updated and on file ahead of the October 5th deadline.”

Brown County voters can check their status through VoteTexas.gov or contact the county voter registrar directly. The elections office specifically advised voters to confirm that their current registration information is updated and on file before the Oct. 5 deadline.
The Texas Tribune first reported Wednesday that tens of thousands of applications statewide were caught in the backlog. State officials told county election administrators that the submissions were held up because of an error at DPS.
