A life shaped by education and service

Born April 24, 1944, in Denison, Texas, Strickland devoted more than 30 years to teaching. Her obituary describes her classroom as a place where students were encouraged to dream, explore and grow, and says she touched countless lives through her dedication to education.

Strickland met Freddie on the Howard Payne University campus one fall afternoon. The couple married in 1966, and Bobbie Kaye graduated in fall 1970. After Freddie served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, the couple returned to Texas and began a career in education, with Brownwood serving as their launching pad.

Freddie worked as a football coach and administrator at several schools, and the family moved multiple times during their careers. Bobbie Kaye continued her own work as a teacher while supporting a life centered on education and service.

Faith, family and a lasting legacy

Outside the classroom, Strickland found purpose in researching theology, reading and teaching Bible studies. Her obituary says she shared her faith and wisdom generously and that her teachings reflected her spiritual journey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Guy Newman and Estelle Newman; her brother, Guy Newman II; and her sisters, Patsy Garner and Charlotte Harris.

Strickland is survived by her children Mari Rainey; John Rainey and his wife, Diane; Vera Longoria and her husband, Robert; and Fred Strickland Jr. and his wife, Shayre. Her family also includes 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The family described in the obituary was her greatest pride. Her legacy, the notice says, is one of kindness, faith and resilience, with memories that will continue to guide those who knew her.
