Betty Storm Alvey, a Brownwood High School graduate whose career in choral music touched generations of students, died Sept. 12, 2026, at her home in Grapevine after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 70.
Alvey was born Sept. 22, 1955, in Brownwood to Melvin and Mary Lou Storm. She was the fourth of six children and was raised in a family that valued hard work, service, shared traditions and time together.
A Brownwood upbringing rooted in family and music
Growing up, Alvey rode horses, cared for animals and developed her musical abilities. She also learned to prepare her mother’s full collection of desserts. Her siblings continued gathering over the years to share food, connect and pass those family traditions to younger generations.
She graduated from Brownwood High School with the Class of 1974 before attending North Texas State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music. An accomplished soprano, she went on to share her musical talents both onstage and in the classroom.
Alvey spent 29 years teaching choral music to middle school students in Irving and Coppell. Her family said she had an exceptional dedication to her students, and former students continued to credit “Ms. Alvey” with helping them become their best selves.
A life centered on loved ones
Family described Alvey as someone who consistently showed up for the people she loved. She was a stepmother to Debi Alvey Gonzalez and took joy in the family Debi built with her husband, Vidal, and their son, Lucas.
She also invested in the lives of 21 nieces and nephews, along with many great-nieces and great-nephews. Alvey encouraged a love of lake life and taught family members to water ski, often pulling children on skis or a tube until sunset. She attended numerous sporting events and musical performances, cheering enthusiastically and offering encouragement.
Alvey was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Beverly Lou Storm. She is survived by her siblings Stephen Storm and his wife, Bebe; Judy Bowers; Loy Storm and his wife, Tricia; and Ann Swanson.
Service plans and memorial wishes
A celebration of Alvey’s life will be held at Plymouth Park United Methodist Church in Irving. The family said service times will be posted later.
In keeping with Alvey’s compassion and commitment to giving, the family suggests that people who wish to honor her make a donation to a charity of their choice. Her family said her memory will endure through the music she loved and the lives she influenced.
